Decide what the visit is for
If the visit collects paper, the local bookkeeper is doing a scanning job you could do yourself with a phone. If the visit is a monthly review where questions get answered face to face, that is a genuine service and the fee should reflect the hour spent, not the driving.
Ask what happens when they are away
A sole local bookkeeper on holiday means a month not reconciled. Ask who covers, and whether the books live in a ledger you can open yourself or on their laptop. Access to your own books is not negotiable, whoever keeps them.

How do I find a local bookkeeper?
Your accountant, your bank's business manager and other owners in the same trade are the usual sources. This site ranks nobody and refers nobody; what it does is price the scope so that whoever you find is quoting against a number you understand.
Should a local bookkeeper have a certification?
Bookkeeping is not licensed in the United States, so certifications are voluntary. Experience with your ledger software and with businesses of your shape matters more, and a reference from a client in your trade matters most.
