The record-keeping periods these pages cite are the IRS's published figures; every fee, hour and rate is arithmetic on the numbers you typed, and no figure on this site is a published national price for bookkeeping, because there is none.

A local bookkeeper is somebody who can come to the office, look at the shoebox, and sit with you for an hour at month end. For a business whose records are still partly on paper, or whose owner wants to hand things over in person, that is worth paying for; for a business whose bank feeds and sales reports are already digital, it is a preference rather than a need. This guide is for the owner choosing between a local bookkeeper and a virtual service, and the hiring sheet on this site prices either against an employee.

Decide what the visit is for

If the visit collects paper, the local bookkeeper is doing a scanning job you could do yourself with a phone. If the visit is a monthly review where questions get answered face to face, that is a genuine service and the fee should reflect the hour spent, not the driving.

Ask what happens when they are away

A sole local bookkeeper on holiday means a month not reconciled. Ask who covers, and whether the books live in a ledger you can open yourself or on their laptop. Access to your own books is not negotiable, whoever keeps them.

Compare on the same scope

Get the local quote for the same counts you would give a virtual service: accounts, transactions, invoices, bills, payroll journals. Put both into the pricing calculator on this site and the difference is either the visit or nothing, and you can decide what the visit is worth.

What an owner comparing bookkeeping quotes asks about the Local bookkeeper

How do I find a local bookkeeper?

Your accountant, your bank's business manager and other owners in the same trade are the usual sources. This site ranks nobody and refers nobody; what it does is price the scope so that whoever you find is quoting against a number you understand.

Should a local bookkeeper have a certification?

Bookkeeping is not licensed in the United States, so certifications are voluntary. Experience with your ledger software and with businesses of your shape matters more, and a reference from a client in your trade matters most.

Can a local bookkeeper also do my taxes?

Only if they are also a tax preparer or work with an accountant who is. Ask which parts of the year-end the quote includes and which go to someone else.
